02:55 pm - Author of New York Sun column starts her own blog titled 'Free Range Kids'
Lenore Skenazy, author of the awesome column "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone" which got a lot of flack and even accusations of child abuse, has started her own blog called "FreeRangeKids" about parenting to give children the same amount of responsibility and freedom that she experienced growing up in New York. From the blog:

" Do you ever... ..let your kid ride a bike to the library? Walk alone to school? Take a bus, solo? Or are you thinking about it? If so, you are raising a Free Range Kid! At Free Range, we believe in safe kids. We believe in helmets, car seats and safety belts. We do NOT believe that every time school age children go outside, they need a security detail. Most of us grew up Free Range and lived to tell the tale. Our kids deserve no less. This site dedicated to sane parenting. Share your stories, tell your tips and maybe one day I will try to collect them in a book. Meantime, let's try to help our kids embrace life! (And maybe even clear the table.)"

The original article about her son's subway ride.

Thanks for this! That blog is available to add to your LJ friends page as freerngekidfeed; I've just added it myself.

Interesting! I just returned from a trip to Atlanta with my 9 year old son, and I got some strange looks when I allowed him to do some things on his own. And we're not even talking about riding the subway!

I'm definitely going to subscribe to the feed. :-)

Hello. I was astonished to know that in your country there is such a problem. Yes, I guess that there is but not to so great extent.
I live in Moscow and my 9yo son goes to school all by himself. And most his classmates too. It takes him 2 subway stations and 10-min walk. Of course, some people consider us non-protective. But the fact would never attract such great public attention.
Sorry for my English.
